Selenium

Selenium products often contain several times the EU NRV in a single tablet. This guide helps you compare the actual dose, selenium form and whether a high-strength product makes sense in context.

What is selenium?

Selenium is an essential trace mineral. It occurs naturally in foods including fish, eggs, meat and Brazil nuts, while the selenium content of plant foods can vary according to the soil in which they are grown. Because the required amounts are small, supplement labels usually use micrograms (µg), not milligrams.

What does selenium support?

Selenium contributes to normal thyroid and immune-system function, the maintenance of normal hair and nails, and protection of cells from oxidative stress. It also contributes to normal sperm formation.

What happens if you don’t get enough selenium?

Selenium deficiency on its own rarely causes obvious illness. In very low-selenium regions it has been associated with specific conditions such as Keshan disease, a form of cardiomyopathy, and deficiency can also worsen the effects of iodine deficiency on thyroid function.

Deficiency is uncommon — and excess matters too

Selenium needs are small, and high habitual intakes can cause selenosis. Hair and nail changes can occur with excessive selenium as well as being marketed as reasons to take it, so symptoms alone are not a good basis for choosing a high-dose supplement.

L-selenomethionine, selenium yeast or inorganic selenium?

L-selenomethionine is an organic selenium-containing amino acid and is widely used in supplements. Selenium-enriched yeast contains selenium incorporated into yeast compounds, commonly including selenomethionine. Inorganic forms such as sodium selenite are chemically different. Form is useful comparison information, but it should not become an unsupported “best form” badge.

How much selenium should you compare?

The EU nutrient reference value is 55 µg. This is useful for label comparison but is not a personal prescription. Products commonly provide 50, 100 or 200 µg, so the daily serving can vary from around the NRV to several times it.

Selenium in thyroid, hair and nail formulas

Selenium is often combined with iodine in thyroid-focused products and with zinc or biotin in hair and nail formulas. These categories fit selenium’s authorised EU claims for normal thyroid function and maintenance of normal hair and nails. A longer ingredient list is not automatically better.

What should you compare?

Selenium per day

Use the recommended daily serving, not just the amount per tablet.

Selenium form

For example L-selenomethionine, selenium yeast or another declared form.

Other active ingredients

Selenium often appears with zinc, iodine, vitamins or antioxidant combinations. Count selenium from overlapping products.

Format and vegan suitability

Tablets and plant capsules can be vegan, but verify the complete formulation rather than assuming from the selenium source.

Health information: More selenium is not automatically better. Consider selenium from food and other supplements, and seek professional advice if supplementation is being used for a diagnosed thyroid, fertility or other medical condition.

More is not automatically better. The EU Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for selenium is 55 µg for adult labelling, while EFSA's adult Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is 255 µg/day from all sources. The NRV is a labelling reference, not a personal dose recommendation. Compare the recommended daily dose and remember selenium from other supplements and food.

Claim framework
EU nutrition and health claims framework. Individual claim cards show the specific claim type, conditions of use, EFSA reference and legal source available in the version data.

Tip: expand any claim above for its claim-specific source details. The European Commission's EU Register is an information service; legal acts are the authoritative source for legal requirements, and some pending claims are not shown in the Register.

Claim use requirements

How much of this nutrient must a food contain for an EU health claim to be used?

For claims requiring the food to be a source of Selenium, the usual NRV-based significant amount is:
8.25 µg / 100 g or 100 ml for foods other than beverages
4.125 µg / 100 ml for beverages
8.25 µg per portion if the package contains only one portion
These are the general EU significant-amount reference levels. A claim-specific condition may be stricter and takes precedence.
