Botanical guide

Green tea / EGCG

Green tea supplements can look similar while providing very different amounts of EGCG, catechins and caffeine. The comparison should start with the labelled EGCG per daily serving — not the total extract weight.

In this guideIngredient basics, choosing & product comparison

What is green tea?

Green tea comes from Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to make black and oolong tea. Because green tea leaves are processed differently, they retain a characteristic mixture of polyphenols known as catechins. Supplements concentrate these compounds into capsules, tablets or extracts, sometimes with most of the caffeine removed.

Why do people take green tea supplements?

Green tea extracts attract interest for their catechins, particularly EGCG, and are studied in relation to metabolism, weight management and cardiovascular outcomes. The findings depend on the preparation and outcome studied.

What is EGCG?

EGCG stands for epigallocatechin gallate (also written epigallocatechin-3-gallate). It is a naturally occurring catechin in green tea and the most abundant catechin considered in EFSA's green-tea safety assessment. EGCG is one reason green tea extracts are standardised by catechin content, but it is also the compound at the centre of the EU's specific safety restriction for concentrated green tea extracts.

Why “800 mg” is not a target dose

The EU rule does not recommend 800 mg EGCG. It requires the daily portion to stay below that level. EFSA found evidence of liver-related changes at supplemental intakes of 800 mg/day and could not establish a safe supplemental dose below that threshold from the available data.

Compare EGCG, caffeine and daily amounts →

Why taking it with food matters

EFSA noted higher EGCG exposure when green tea extracts were taken under fasting conditions. EU labels therefore require the warning not to consume green tea extract on an empty stomach. This is a meaningful comparison field, not a minor footnote.

Tea vs supplement

A cup of tea is not a concentrated extract capsule

EFSA considered traditional green tea infusions generally safe at typical reported intakes. Supplements can concentrate catechins and may be taken as a single bolus, so the risk context is different even though both come from Camellia sinensis.

Caffeine can vary independently of EGCG

Some green tea extracts are decaffeinated or contain only a few milligrams of caffeine, while others provide tens of milligrams per daily serving. A product can therefore be high in EGCG but low in caffeine, or vice versa.

Green tea extract is more than one number

What the label may show

Extract weightFor example 400–800 mg green tea extract per day. This does not tell you the EGCG amount by itself.
PolyphenolsOften shown as a percentage or milligram amount.
CatechinsA subgroup of green tea polyphenols that includes EGCG.
EGCGThe most important comparison number for EU supplement safety labelling.

What should you compare?

EGCG per day

The most important safety-oriented comparison metric.

Total catechins

Useful for understanding extract standardisation.

Caffeine

Especially relevant for sensitive users and products taken later in the day.

Daily serving

One capsule vs two capsules can change the EGCG exposure substantially.

Food directions

EU green tea extract products should not be consumed on an empty stomach.

Required warnings

These belong visibly in a consumer comparison because they are mandatory safety information.

Health information: Concentrated botanical extracts can have safety concerns and medicine interactions. This guide is general information, not personal medical advice.

Product comparison

Compare green tea supplements

Compare epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) per day, extract per unit, serving, catechins or polyphenols, caffeine, use instructions, warnings, format and vegan suitability.

EU rule: daily EGCG must stay below 800 mg. The 800 mg level is a restriction, not a target. Products also require warnings about empty-stomach use, other green tea products, pregnancy/breastfeeding and use under age 18.

Default order: labelled EGCG per recommended day, lower to higher. The order is not a ranking and does not imply that more EGCG is better.
