What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring compound found in the body and foods. Supplements commonly provide ubiquinone or ubiquinol.

Why do people take CoQ10?

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound involved in cellular energy production. It has been studied in areas including cardiovascular health, migraine, statin-associated muscle symptoms and fertility, with findings varying by outcome and study.

CoQ10 and statins

Statins act on the mevalonate pathway, which is also involved in CoQ10 synthesis, and statin treatment can lower circulating CoQ10. This has led to research on CoQ10 supplements for statin-associated muscle symptoms.

The evidence is mixed. A 2025 meta-analysis of seven randomised trials (389 participants) found a small reduction in reported muscle pain overall, but individual trials were inconsistent and the authors said more research is needed. Earlier meta-analysis and European Atherosclerosis Society guidance did not find sufficient evidence to recommend CoQ10 for preventing or treating statin-associated muscle symptoms.

If you take a statin: muscle symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional rather than stopping or changing prescribed medication yourself.

Ubiquinone vs ubiquinol

Ubiquinone is the oxidised form of CoQ10 and ubiquinol is the reduced form. Both appear on supplement labels. IngredientScope lists the form as a comparison fact rather than declaring one automatically better.

How much CoQ10 is in the product?

There is no IngredientScope target dose. Compare the amount in the labelled daily serving and avoid treating terms such as “high strength” as a substitute for the number.
