What is biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and amino acids.

What does biotin support?

Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin, as well as normal mucous membranes. It also supports normal energy-yielding and macronutrient metabolism, and normal nervous-system and psychological function.

Biotin, hair and skin

Hair and skin are especially natural biotin topics because the Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin. These are better foundations for beauty-focused content than broad promises about faster hair growth or thicker hair.

High-dose biotin and blood tests

The EU label NRV for biotin is 50 µg, yet many beauty supplements contain amounts measured in milligrams rather than micrograms. High supplemental biotin can interfere with some laboratory tests and produce falsely high or low results, including certain thyroid-hormone and other diagnostic assays.

Tell the healthcare team about biotin before laboratory testing

Biotin itself has low known toxicity, but test interference is a separate safety issue. Check the product instructions and laboratory or healthcare guidance rather than guessing how long to stop a high-dose product before a test.

What should you compare?

Biotin / day

Compare the amount supplied by the recommended daily serving.

Standalone or beauty blend

Biotin may be sold alone or combined with zinc, selenium, collagen-related ingredients or other B vitamins.

Format

Tablets, capsules and gummies can differ substantially in dose and added ingredients.

The EU Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for biotin is 50 µg for adult labelling. Biotin is water-soluble, and standalone products often provide many times the EU NRV. The NRV is a labelling reference, not a personal dose recommendation or a measure of product effectiveness.

How products are ordered: by labelled daily biotin amount, lower to higher; equal amounts alphabetically. This is not a ranking.

Claim framework
EU nutrition and health claims framework. Individual claim cards show the specific claim type, conditions of use, EFSA reference and legal source available in the version data.

Tip: expand any claim above for its claim-specific source details. The European Commission's EU Register is an information service; legal acts are the authoritative source for legal requirements, and some pending claims are not shown in the Register.

Claim use requirements

How much of this nutrient must a food contain for an EU health claim to be used?

For claims requiring the food to be a source of Biotin, the usual NRV-based significant amount is:
7.5 µg / 100 g or 100 ml for foods other than beverages
3.75 µg / 100 ml for beverages
7.5 µg per portion if the package contains only one portion
These are the general EU significant-amount reference levels. A claim-specific condition may be stricter and takes precedence.
